Electricity generation, which stood at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mmo.org.tr\/sites\/default\/files\/gonderi_dosya_ekleri\/TegNisan2021Sunumu_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">210 billion kilowatt hours <\/a>in 2010, increased to 331 billion kilowatt hours in 2021. The increase in electricity demand decreased by 0.3% in 2019, increased by 0.5% in 2020 and 8.1% in 2021. Electricity demand, which was 304 billion kilowatt hours in 2018, increased to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teias.gov.tr\/aylik-elektrik-uretim-tuketim-raporlari\">331 billion kilowatt hours<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teias.gov.tr\/tr-TR\/turkiye-elektrik-uretim-iletim-istatistikleri\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/tr\/tr\/pages\/energy-and-resources\/articles\/covid-19-un-turkiye-elektrik-talebi-ve-gsyh-uzerine-etkisi.html\" target=\"_blank\">linear relationship<\/a> between electricity consumption and economic activity in Turkey. It can be said that the sudden changes in the Turkish economy and growth rate are reflected in electricity consumption, and that the growth trend seen in developed countries by consuming less energy has not yet been observed in Turkey&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2010 and 2020, primary energy supply increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/enerji.mmo.org.tr\/sunumlar\/\">36%<\/a> and electricity demand increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teias.gov.tr\/tr-TR\/turkiye-elektrik-uretim-iletim-istatistikleri\">44%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lion&#8217;s share of Turkey&#8217;s primary energy supply belongs to fossil fuels. As of 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/enerji.mmo.org.tr\/sunumlar\/\">the share of coal in primary energy supply is 27.6%, oil is 28.6% and natural gas is 27%<\/a>. The remaining 16.8% consists of hydroelectric, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and energy sources obtained from waste. The share of fossil resources in primary energy supply is 83.3%, while the share of imported resources is 70.2%.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/2904701\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Total Primary Energy Supply by Source, 1990-2020. By 2020, net energy imports constituted <a href=\"https:\/\/enerji.mmo.org.tr\/sunumlar\/\">71%<\/a> of Turkey\u2019s primary energy supply, up from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eigm.gov.tr\/tr-TR\/Denge-Tablolari\/Denge-Tablolari?page=1\" target=\"_blank\">54%<\/a> in 1990. As of 2019, energy imports constitute 19.8% of total imports. In the first five months of 2022, the share of energy imports in total imports reached <a href=\"https:\/\/data.tuik.gov.tr\/Bulten\/Index?p=Dis-Ticaret-Istatistikleri-Kasim-2020-33859\">27%<\/a> due to the increase in fossil fuel prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/2904781\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Energy imports in Turkey, 2013 &#8211; 2019. Discovery and extraction of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon energy resources, introduction of nuclear power, utilization of Turkey\u2019s renewable energy potential apart from hydroelectricity (such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass) lay at the heart of&nbsp; Turkey\u2019s energy strategy.
